But even better than that, was the fact there was a documentary crew capturing everything happening with the championship and what was happening in and around Sebastian’s life. The three-part series – Game To Glory – chronicles Sebastian’s journey to the top, and we’ve picked out five of the best moments from the documentary…
5.TheHamSandwichSuperstition
Every race of the 2020 season took place on Saturday afternoons with qualifying starting at 15:00BST. His mum Alison and dad Martin were left in the dark when it came to race day. They weren’t allowed on the Wi-Fi from midday and had to wait for Sebastian to come down the stairs to find out how he had done, but one thing his mum was allowed to do was make Sebastian his ham sandwich, that he had to have at exactly 1pm.
The superstition began at the start of the season when Sebastian had a ham sandwich for lunch on the first race. Sebastian won the feature race that day, so every race day since, he has to have his ham sandwich.
Alison explained that Sebastian is not a fussy eater at all, but on race day, he has to have his ham sandwich for lunch. “I get it ready, wrap it up in cling film and then send it up to him for 1pm.”
4.Sebastian’sFirstRig
When you see Sebastian’s rig, it’s impressive. The triple screen, the aluminium frame it’s all top-of-the-range equipment needed to become world champion. But he didn’t always have such an impressive set-up. It left, shall we say, a lot to be desired. Sebastian’s dad Martin explained that he was using a computer he had built himself, with a steering wheel screwed into to a normal office desk, the pedals secured to a board on the ground and he was sitting at a dining room chair. Very humble beginnings for the champion. It shows that if you’re determined enough, you can make it happen.
3.LearningAboutHimselfAtLoughboroughUniversity
In the past, there has been a stigma attached to gaming. Players were seen as recluses that didn’t go outside and certainly don’t exercise. Sebastian shows that being a professional Esports competitor is like being an athlete in any other discipline – You have to have a strong mind and body if you’re going to be the best.
Game To Glory follows Sebastian to Loughborough University where he is put through a hat-full of tests to see what shape Sebastian is an how it can be improved. His personal trainer, Lewis Paris goes along as they give Sebastian a nutrition analysis, a body composition test, movement screening, a strength and conditioning assessment and a VO2 Max analysis. After the exhausting experience Sebastian and Lewis know what is needed to take him to the next level. “It told me a lot about myself, it was nice to see where my strengths are and what Lewis and I can focus on the future,” explained Sebastian.
2.TheRedBullRacingEsportsPaintSchemeReveal
Spoiler alert, in the final episode of Game To Glory Sebastian takes the title and as a reward the Red Bull Racing Esports Team invite Sebastian up Porsche’s Experience Centre at Silverstone for a special unveiling. The Team brought Sebastian’s iconic racing paint scheme to life on a real Porsche GT3 race car. Not only did it look amazing, it was done perfectly, so much so that Sebastian even commented that his reference points on the bonnet lined up perfectly with the once he uses in his game car.
1.ThatWinningMoment!
This was obviously going to be the number one moment in the series, and the build-up is fantastic. From Sebastian’s nerves to the fact the Alison and Martin leave the house to watch the final at a friend and neighbour’s house. Alison usually found out how Sebastian had got one when the neighbours would walk past and tell her how her son had got on in the race.
It is a wonderful climax to the series with Sebastian spraying champagne on his driveway and promising a proper celebration once the COVID restrictions have been lifted.
