Back then, in 2019, the Bulls roared through the streets of Cape Town, with David Coulthard taking on South African comedian Jason Goliath in an iconic race across the Mother City.
This time, however, the action moved north, and it was the turn of Joburg where DC and Jason were reunited for an eye-popping, ear-splitting celebration of F1 and motorsport power. Along with co-host and fellow comic Mpho ‘Pops’ Modikoane, Jason revved up the massive crowd before DC once again fired up the mighty, double title-winning RB7 for a sequence of awesome runs on the specially constructed 800m track. And the fans on the streets and surrounding balconies were treated to a spectacular finale as DC ended the show with a rubber-shredding, smoke-wreathed series of donuts.

“We’ve had an absolutely fantastic reception here in Johannesburg,” said the 13-time Grand Prix winner afterwards. “It’s no surprise, though, because we've been to South Africa before in Cape Town. But of course, there's a rivalry between the towns, so Joburg wanted to show that it could put on a great event, and it's absolutely been fantastic.”
While David and the RB7 were the undoubted stars of the show, the afternoon was a veritable festival of motorsport power as the Scot was joined by a host of fellow stars from the world of Red Bull motorsport, including Elias Hountondji of the world-famous Drift Brothers, Motorbike stunt rider Arūnas ‘Aras’ Gibieža, and newly-minted Red Bull athlete and local South African spinning hero, Sam Sam. A sensation in his native South Africa, Sam Sam wowed the crowd with a mind-boggling display of what can only be described as drifting meets dancing.

“It’s absolutely fantastic to be here with all these athletes. I've worked with a few before, but also it’s been great to welcome Sam Sam to the Red Bull family. I was not so familiar with spinning, but what I've seen and understood is that it's a unique sport and very challenging. Also, it's very grassroots and connects with local communities. So hopefully the fact that he's now being brought in as a Red Bull athlete will help bring more and more focus on that sport, and we'll be able to see it grow, not only in South Africa but around the world.”
“Honestly, it's been a little mini-motorsport festival,” he concluded. “There's no question that when we do a Red Bull show car event in a country, it stimulates interest for those that have never really been following this form of motorsport before. And I especially love when seeing the younger kids out there, the young boys and girls, because hopefully you're stimulating a lifelong fandom of the sport in them, and it may also lead to a career in the industry. So I think Red Bull does more than any other team, any other company, when it comes to actually promoting motorsports in places where we don't have a Grand Prix.”
But with the fans’ appetite for F1 renewed and with the sport hungry to head back to the only major continent lacking a race, it may not be long before SA is once again back on the F1 map.
