PESC 2022 Event Two - CatalunyaA drama-filled Feature Race capped off a disappointing afternoon for the Bulls at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya in the Porsche TAG Heuer Esports Supercup.
Round two saw the Red Bull Racing Esports pros Sebastian Job, Graham Carroll and Cooper Webster head to Catalunya to take on some of the world’s best sim racing talent.
The Bulls endured a tough qualifying session for the Sprint Race, with Sebi and Cooper on the eight row in P16 and P17, and Graham just behind in P20.
Sprint
A good start from Sebi sent him up two places into P14 heading into turn four. There was some big drama on the first few laps with cars colliding everywhere. Sebi managed to take evasive action and climb up into P10, with Cooper close behind in P12 and Graham up to P19. With so much going on around them, all three Bulls were lucky to avoid any contact at all, taking full advantage of it in the process. Graham fought hard on the final few laps, moving up three places to finish in P15. Sebi claimed P10, with Cooper in P12.
FeatureRace
In the Feature Race, all three Bulls had a good start, with each driver making up one place from their grid position. The good luck was about to change though as disaster struck further into the first lap. Charlie Collins took a spin heading towards turn 10, and collided into the side of Sebi’s car, sending him off the track and all but ending his race. Chaos ensued as cars sprawled all over the circuit facing different directions, and as Graham managed to avoid any initial contact, he was tapped by a driver coming back onto the track and took a spin himself. This finished his race, as he sustained too much damage to be able to continue. Season debutant Cooper managed to evade the incident unscathed, climbing to P6. Seb managed to continue, fighting his way through the back of the pack to finish in P25 and just into the points. Cooper’s impressive start to the season continued, finishing P6 – his third top-ten finish in the first four races, putting him in P4 in the drivers standings. He’ll be looking to continue his charge when the Bulls take the trip to Interlagos on March 5th.
Cooper Webster, who has enjoyed a positive start in his tournament debut, said: “I really happy with how my races turned out overall. I performed poorly in qualifying, starting in 17th and lost a few tenths on my lap but I am really pleased with the way I recovered in both races. Especially considering the battles on lap 1 and how hard I had to work to avoid crashes.”
“The competition is super close and that fuels chaotic races - it’s just something we will all have to deal with and learn how to best get results out of these situations that are hard to recreate and practice in. For myself, racing the qualifying series and contender series really prepared me for this season of PESC with how to pick and choose my fights and when to risk it. I will have a short rest then back into laps ahead of round 3. Keeping on track is key.
