AerodynamicsTechnologyDevelopment
Aero Technology Development is one of the core areas of the Aerodynamics department which allows practical testing to take place. In this role you will help develop the latest technology and instrumentation required to conduct aerodynamic testing. A good understanding of aerodynamics is useful. However, this role works across a number of engineering fields including software, controls systems and electronics. A genuinely solid foundation for young engineers.
This role is very focussed on aerodynamics and is responsible for assisting the development of the current Formula 1 car’s internal and external aerodynamic performance. Both theoretical and practical testing are key to this role therefore a good understanding of the first principals of aerodynamics are essential.
Here you will help the Team evaluate ‘on track’ aerodynamics, the analysis of aerodynamic performance is key to unlocking the RB16’s performance. An understanding of aerodynamics would be a strong advantage in this field, however a good understanding of measurement techniques and vehicle dynamics are also important.
Vehicle Dynamics brings together all areas of vehicle performance to allow the Team to understand the RB16 as a whole. The successful candidate will be studying engineering and have an excellent analytical mind in order to assist with the development and understanding of vehicle performance, from both theoretical and practical standpoints. This role also offers an excellent opportunity to support live events to help deliver success at race weekends.

The Student placements within the Team have been running for several years now, and one former graduate said: “When joining I wasn’t quite sure what to expect other than I was sure I was going to be thrown in at the deep end.
“Whilst the learning curve is above and beyond anything I’ve ever experienced, I had the best minds taking the time to take me through each step. In what feels like no time you’re given responsibility of your own projects and seeing your own parts broadcast live to the world.
“Whilst the work can be tough, it is also incredibly rewarding. Returning to university is a breeze with the knowledge and skills gained during the placement. With time management and group work becoming second nature, your individual and group projects actually result in results… I could never have expected when originally applying I’d now be in a full-time career in Formula One.”
Another successful candidate said about their time with the Team: “Before I started, I was expecting a step up in intensity and workload from university, but everyone at the Team were supportive and helpful while I learned the ropes.
“During my placement year I learnt a huge amount, from technical knowledge to how best to communicate with different people, and after a steep learning curve the work I was doing was impacting the development of the car. It was a big change from university life and applying what I had learned at university as opposed to simply learning required a different approach to working, but I feel this gave me a definite advantage when it came to juggling final year projects, extra-curricular activities and life.
“Overall, it’s a lot of hard work, but the satisfaction from contributing to a race winning team and the potential opportunities it opens up for graduate careers absolutely makes it worth it.”
If this sounds like something you would like to be a part of and would succeed at, then this is your chance to join the charge. The placements are due to start in the summer of 2021 but the deadline for applications to be submitted is Sunday 8 November. So get applying and good luck.
