Max'sQualifyingRun
Max loves the Red Bull Ring and delivered in qualifying once again. Max had set the early benchmark in Q3 thanks to a lap of 1:05.092. The session was interrupted by two red flags, but with just over two minutes left on the clock a queue of cars formed at the pit exit with Max last to take to the circuit. Leclerc who was ahead of Max, jumped to provisional pole with a lap of 1:05.013, with Sainz just five hundredths of a second behind. But a few hundred metres behind, Max was shaving time off the best of both and he crossed the line as the only man under 1m05s with a lap of 1:04.984 to take his third pole of the season and his third at the Red Bull Ring.
Checo’sChargeInTheSprint
Due to Sergio’s times being deleted in Q3, he was forced to start Saturday’s Sprint Race from down in P13. But there’s nothing Checo likes more than a challenge. At the start of the race, Checo was a man on a mission and by the end of the opening lap he’d reached P8.
Checo wasn’t done there though, he kept pushing and was soon on the tail of a Haas train. He kept his cool with his Race Engineer Hugh Bird telling the Bull to: “Bide your time.” Checo saw his chance and took both Schumacher and Magnussen within one lap. He then got in front of Ocon soon after. He crossed the finish line in P5 moving up an impressive eight places in just 23 laps.
Max’sDominationOfTheSprint
The 23-lap sprint race always causes a few head scratching issues for the strategy team, but with Max on pole and on medium tyres, he made it look easy. He had to defend early as the two Ferraris of Leclerc and Sainz were bearing down, but he covered their move well and then was away. By the end of the fifth lap, he was already 2.3s ahead. He extended that lead to 2.7s and never looked like being caught. In fact, he was so clear of trouble that the TV coverage hardly showed him at all, they were too busy focusing on Checo’s charge through the pack.
PitStopCrewFlexTheirMusclesAgain
The pit crew were on fire at the weekend. With Max pitting three times in the race, they were always ready, and as we’ve come to expect, always fast. Two of the three stops were in the top ten of the fastest in the race, the quickest being just 2.33s. These stops ensure that Max was able to claim P2 and his seventh podium finish at the Red Bull Ring.
Ain’tNoPartyLikeARedBullParty
With the Austrian Grand Prix, there was always going to be a thrill-fest with other athletes from the Red Bull family showing off their skills and machines. Elias and Johannes Hountondji, better known as the Driftbrothers, gave the crowd a tyre-shredding display in their BMW M4s. The Flying Bulls, based at Hangar 7 in Salzburg, took the short flight to display their aircraft over the Red Bull Ring - bringing their Alpha Jet, a B-25, the stunning Corsair, the eye-catching chrome P-38 Lightning and the Bell Cobra helicopter to the party. There was also a display from former Red Bull Air Race pilot Dario Costa and the HSV Red Bull Parachuting Team, so there was plenty of action in the sky as well as on the track.
And what Red Bull party would be complete without DC donning his race suit and jumping in a RB8? The eight-cylinder 750hp car, that revs to 18,000rpm is a sight to behold and the noise can rattle the fillings out your teeth. Always one to put on a good show, DC delivered some donuts, burnouts and everything else you’d do if you got your hands on that particular car.
