The team unveiled the new chapter of innovation in Formula One by launching our 2022 car to the world in a fan first experience, as Christian Horner, Max Verstappen, Sergio Perez and engineering showcased our RB18.
With the new regulations offering a completely different look to this season’s cars and plenty of unknowns, Christian’s looking forward to getting get out on track: “With the new regulation changes this year, the whole philosophy has altered from last year, which means every single component is different to last year’s car. It’s a clean sheet of paper for every single team. By the time we get to the first race, the RB18 won’t look much like it looked on Wednesday, the evolution will be very quick as we progress through the season.”
Christian went on to say: “The car is a lot cleaner this year, there’s not all the added bits that were on last years and the whole concept of these cars is to try and promote overtaking and close racing. It is a steep learning curve for everyone and it is a race of development between the first and last race.”
However, he’s well aware it’s not about the car at the first race, or even completely down to the racing on track. “It’s going to be about development,” he explained. “It’s about how quickly the teams get on top of the new regulations. It’s the biggest change for 30-40 years, so development is going to be thick and fast and of course with the cost cap, it’s got to be efficient.”
As he was looking over the RB18, Christian went on to explain what the goals are for the Team in 2022. “We plan to build on 2021, we have number one on the car this year and now the challenge is to keep it and defend that title with Max.” However, Christian knows it’s not going to be simple, but has a great team for that defence. “We believe we have a good car for 2022 and the RB18 is coming to life. It’s been a huge effort from the Team and I am looking forward to seeing it out on the track now. The excitement and hard work of 2021 really galvanised the Team and it means we go into 2022 in great shape for the season ahead.”
The RB18 launch was very much a fan-led event and a platform for Oracle Red Bull Racing to thank the fans for all their support, something which Christian understands is hugely important to the Team. “The fans are everything to us,” Christian said and concluded by adding: “Without the fans there is no Formula One, and there is no Oracle Red Bull Racing. This launch was all about them. We’ve seen great growth in the last couple of years and we’re delighted to welcome them and hopefully give them some great experiences this year.”
