Well with our recent competition that’s just launched, where using your photo skills could win you a unique prize, we thought it would be the perfect time to talk to Red Bull Racing Esports’ official photographers Brian Campbell (@bcampbell_photo) and Oleg Sadovnikov (@Zakon_By) to give us their five top tips on how to get those jaw-dropping images.
Framing a shot is one thing amateur snappers don’t get. You’ve all seen your aunt’s photos on Facebook where you can’t work out what the actual subject of the picture is, so you need to ensure the image is framed properly. Use the rule of thirds, or golden ratio, to frame your photos properly.
The rule of thirds is an imagined guideline that breaks an image into nine squares or rectangles and four gridlines. By positioning subjects along the gridlines, you’ll end up with better compositions. Placing your subject in the left or right third of an image to create a well composed shot. This is not only a method for Esports, but a good start for all photography.

Unlike in the real world, games like F1 2021 allow you to change the time of day and weather with a click of the button. You can use this to your advantage by gaining shadows or cool lighting effects in your shot. Adjust the bloom settings to make things really pop.
If you are shooting for a team or certain driver in particular, then try to emphasise them. You should capture them on their own or in corner shots. Use the zoom features to really capture the moment. Don’t forget your detail shots, close ups of helmets/wings/wheels.

One thing you should never have to ask is: ‘What is going on in this photograph?’ And if it’s been framed properly, you won’t have to, but you need to tell a story. You can do this with your images. Getting racing shots on long straights or in corners with rival teams battling is a great storyline.
Once you’ve got the basics right and have your bearings, it’s now time to push the boundaries. Try new settings, new locations, new lighting. Don’t be afraid to push it. Here’s a test - try Abu Dhabi in the rain!
Now you know what makes a good photograph, go and get capturing and don’t forget to send us your best shots for the chance to win a one-off prize.
