He returned to Mercedes in 2017 to work as a Pitwall Strategist. However, seeking a new challenge, he joined the strategy department at Oracle Red Bull Racing during the 2021 season. He started working trackside on a full-time basis the following season and at the season-closing 2022 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix took charge of strategy at a race for the first time with the Team.
Along with Will Courtenay and Hannah Schmitz, Steve was a regular presence on the pit wall in 2023 and 2024, sharing strategy lead or support duties with both, on a rotating schedule. In September of last year, as part of a restructuring of the Rrace Team, Steve was promoted to the role of Acting Head of Sporting.
